Issue 66. Out Now

Festival Fever

It’s that time of year when Winchester goes mad for culture in all its forms: art, theatre, music, literature – and the rest. We’ve had the MAYfest, and now we are looking ahead to even more events in the city, with the Winchester Festival itself (page 41), which begins on 4 July and runs for two weeks.
Wise opera lovers will already have booked their tickets for Grange Opera, which is including ballet and Bryn Terfel with accompanist Iain Burnside in its programme. It is one of the most glorious settings for opera anywhere in the world and it’s here on our doorstep.
In contrast, the Hat Fair is Britain’s longest running celebration of street arts and community. In 1974 it started as a buskers’ festival where performers passed around a hat to collect a donation after their show — hence the name Hat Fair and it’s in a street near you from 3 July.
Then there’s the fascinating Art and Mind Festival, which takes place over two days, 13 and 14 June, at the Theatre Royal, while, for the more athletic among us, Winchester’s Bike Week goes into overdrive from 14-22 June.
Plus the Writers’ Conference will be bringing
in all sorts of literary types at the end of the month, in conjunction with the University. Lectures, a bookfair and workshops will be taking place, with more than 60 guests drawn from the world of books.
Yes, it’s a packed programme, we have a lot of people to thank for organising the events and now it’s up to us all to buy the tickets to make sure Winchester stays at the forefront of festival fever. Phew . . . time for a little lie down.
